Assessment
The Initial Assessment is approximately one hour in duration, multiple conditions or Motor Vehicle Accident examinations may require more time. A comprehensive Health History sets the stage for the examination, as many symptoms not commonly associated with the spine may have their origin in nerve dysfunction. It is important for the doctor to know about all aspects of your health in order to determine the best course of treatment.
The actual examination will involve active and passive range of motion testing (ROM), palpation, reflexes, muscle testing and standard orthopedic tests. You will be advised if further testing (Xrays, nerve conduction studies, etc) are required. On your second scheduled visit you will be provided a Report of Findings and recommended Treatment Plan to help resolve your condition.
Adjustment
There are many different ways to adjust the spine and extremities and Dr. Horner has become proficient in many techniques. Upon completion of the Examination, your second office visit or Report of Findings will explain what is wrong, what Chiropractic can do to improve your condition and an estimate of how long it will take to recover. A focussed Treatment Plan will be discussed including manipulation/mobilization of the affected area(s) and any physiotherapy modalites that may be required.

Cold Laser Therapy
Cold Laser treatment offers a non-invasive approach to the treatment of acute and chronic joint pain, sprains, muscle strain, soft tissue injuries, tendonitis, Arthritis, Tennis elbow, bursitis, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, back pain, Sciatica and Fibromyalgia.
The Cold Laser creates an impulse of light in two specific wavelengths (905nm and 660 nm) involving a deep penetration up to 4-5 inches that can only be accomplished using a super-pulsed laser emitter.
The purpose of laser therapy is to provide light energy units or photons to damaged cells. These photons absorbed by the cells stimulate the mitochondria to boost production of ATP, the chemical form of energy used by all cells of the body. This specific biochemical increase in cell energy is utilized by live cells from a state connected with illness to a stable, healthy state.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a therapy that is utilized in the office to handle injuries related to joints, muscle spasms, as well as most soft tissues. While it shares the same name, this ultrasound is not the same as the type of ultrasound utilized diagnostically to screen internally in the body. This ultrasound creates small sound waves that in effect vibrate and massage soft tissues and muscle. These sound waves do an excellent job in facilitating the body's healing process in addition to decreasing scar tissue formation.
Certain ultrasound settings also create a heating effect to help relax the muscles or tightness in the body. This heat combined with the overall features of the ultrasound help to start the healing process at the most basic cellular level speeding up your road to recovery.

Supplements & Topical Pain Relief
Chiropractic is one of the leading Natural Health care professions in North America, and your doctor will not prescribe medications. Natural alternatives may be recommended in your case to help such conditions as Arthritis, Peripheral Neuropathy, cholesterol and glucose metabolism, spinal disc repair and for topical pain relief. Some products are special formulations that Dr. Horner has researched for their potency, quality and effectiveness and are carried in-office. Other products may be purchased in Health Food stores as they tend to be higher quality than those supplements that are mass-produced.
A few natural supplements may interact with prescription medications, so it is important to keep the doctor informed of any changes to your medications.
Custom Orthotics
Prescription orthotics and custom-made orthopedic shoes are medical devices that are specially made to correct abnormal foot and leg function. Orthotics work on the feet the same way braces work on the teeth. By exerting gentle pressure to bring foot muscles and bones back into proper alignment, a correction can be made. With each step, your feet are gently and consistently forced into the correct functioning position for standing, walking and running. Pressure points, improper rotations of the foot, painful knee strain and abnormal forces on the legs, hips, knees and feet are eliminated as orthotics enable your feet to function properly.
Common conditions that can be helped with the use of custom made orthotics include:
-
foot pain, knee pain, low back pain
-
bunions, heel spurs, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints
-
flat feet, foot and leg fatigue, foot and toe cramps
-
repetitive athletic injuries, swelling, calluses and corns.
